Toy Chihuahuas

The Chihuahua is tiny dog that can fit in a handbag or be picked up easily when it starts getting yappy. Their small stature means that they classify as a 'toy' breed (as opposed to medium or standard). Think of them as deluxe pups, perfect for those who want a more compact canine companion.

Chihuahuas only come in two breeds – long haired or short haired – and so aren't available in any other size. This means you need to be careful when deciding if the toy Chuahua is the correct breed for you. On the one hand, having a smaller dog means you won't have half a tonne of Labrador bounding around your living room and knocking things over. For this reason toy Cihuahua are perhaps more suited to those with lots of valuable ornaments or waddling toddlers.

Toy Chihuahua also require fewer walks due to their tiny bodies and most will be happy burning off enough energy just entertaining themselves in the back garden. They're also cheaper to maintain as toy dogs are less prone to injuring their legs and you won’t have to buy quite so much food (when you do make sure it’s suitable for smaller dogs).

The only downside to toy sizes is that they can be easily lost and may not be suitable for elderly owners who may find they get under their feet. Toys can be notorious for tripping people up as they can get under your feet without being spotted. They're also more susceptible to be hurt by other dogs, particularly as some breeds such as the Whippet may mistake them for rabbits!
