Different breeds of dog are prone to different types of injuries and problems due to differing bone structure and joints. While Chihuahua are generally safe from many of the problems that plague other larger breeds for example, they are susceptible to several problems of their own.
Common Chihuahua Problems
Problems common for dogs in general include difficulties with bones, aching joints, problems with the ears (which can become gooey or sceptic, particularly in ‘floppy eared’ varieties), eyes (again gunk), teeth and mouth. These are relatively irritating problems however compared to more dangerous issues that can arise with the digestive system (the stomach in particular can become knotted), heart and respiratory systems (much like humans), and the reproduction and urinary systems.
Specific Chihuahua Problems
Specifically ‘Chihuahua' problems though include: patellar luxation which occurs when the patella (AKA kneecap – a part of the ‘stifle’ joint (knee joint)) ‘luxates’ or in plain English pops out of place resulting in pain and difficulty walking; and eye problems such as entropion which describes the eyelid becoming twisted inside out against the eyeball which can again result in pain and further complications with the eye. That’s the price they pay for those puppy dog looks that get them fed…
While these problems might sound like a cause for concern, realise that all dogs and indeed all pets can get health complications. Make sure you get proper insurance on your animal and try not to let it put you off what could be the beginning of a beautiful relationship. You wouldn't avoid making any friends on the off chance they could get ill, so try to take the same approach to Chihuahua problems.
