Why Does My Chihuahua Need Clothes?
Your Chihuahua is tiny. There's a lot of skin to radiate heat, and not much body volume to make or retain it. Chihuahuas ("Chis") get cold easily. They catch cold easily. Unprotected out in below-freezing air, they can get hypothermia and die within an hour to four hours, faster if wet. These little dogs need clothes to retain their body heat and keep the wind and rain off.
Incidentally, Chihuahuas look really cute in clothes. That's not a "need," but it certainly is desirable...
Chihuahua Dressing Tips
They NEED a sweater against the cold air. That means inside an air-conditioned room, as well as outside in the winter. It's good to have light sweaters or shirts for moderate temperatures and heavier sweaters or coats when it's cool.
A coat, which has a tight-weave surface to stop wind, is very good for winter. A raincoat may be necessary if your region gets cool rains and you don't have a covered place outdoors for your dogs to relieve themselves.
Boots are nice if your dog really likes to go for walks even when it's cold outside. If you are in an area that gets ice, there will be ice and rock salt on the walks and roadways; those can be very hard on a dog's feet.
Style: If you're going to dress your dog, do it up! Have fun picking out styles and accessorizing. Beads and trims can make most dog clothes look great, and try delicate ribbons, fancy bandannas, gold harnesses and leashes to dress up your Chihuahua for a special day.
Sweaters come in solids, stripes, argyles and tartans. Little woven scarves can warm her delicate throat, and matching ski hats cover tender ears. How about a puffy down coat, a rugged Aspen-style fleece jacket, or a hooded parka? Show off your little girl in a pink chiffon dress, or let her step out in practical red gingham. If it could possibly look cute on a dog, someone is making it, and everything looks cute on a Chihuahua.
What color is your dog? Consider his or her "season" in a fashion sense.
Spring: Light fawn or brindle, light red, particolored that are mostly light-colored, some yellow or gray in the eye color; a friendly, talkative or noisy, curious nature. Try intense warm colors like gold, yellow, red and orange. Bright green should work well, too.
Summer: Fawn, light chocolate, red merle, maybe some "crackly" pattern in the iris; a quiet, cautious, stubborn but gentle personality. Try cool, muted colors: pastel blues and purples, a shimmering grey...
Autumn: Dark chocolate, black, dark brindle, blue merle, particolored that are mostly dark colored; a quick and energetic, impulsive, sometimes irritable way of being. Use the colors of falling leaves: muted reds, warm browns, yellow and green.
Winter: White, cream, lavendar, blue, maybe spoke patterns in the eye in the right light; a sensitive, anxious, loyal nature. He or she will look best in strong cool colors, such as silver, bright blue, purple, black and white.
